Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 1-4Verses 5-8

THE OBJECT OF PROPHETIC MISSION
VERSE NO. 1-4
This chapter too begins with glorification and sanctification of God, referring to some of Allah's important attributes:-
``Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth sanctify Allah, the King, the Holy, the Exalted in might, the Wise.''
Then the immediate reference is to the Prophetic Mission, and in particular to that of our prophet, Mohammad (SA) which is all miraculous!
The Arabic, ``OMMI'' translated to illiterate or unlettered, relates to mother and mother's teaching, and therefore, may also mean unlettered or uneducated.
It mystically referes to the Arabs being compared with the people of the Book who had a long tradition of learning. In general, it implies that God's revelation is for the benefit of all mankind whether they are educated or illiterate.
Worthy of note is here that our prophet, like any other Arab was illiterate, and never learned reading or writting!
By this, ``RECITING THE SIGNS OF GOD'' may be referring to God's creation and ordering the world; which may also include the verses of QurÌn, and all the other Scriptures.
The reference is made to some of God's important attributes such as the King because of His care for all His subjects including the uneducated and illiterates. Allah is the HOLY, Who purifies and sanctifies and also cleanse those of His servants who have fallen in sin and wickedness.
Allah is Exalted in might that He confers His Grace to whom He finds deserving, while no one can ever hold His hand. He is wise and instructs His servants and bestows on them knowledge and wisdom through Scriptures or Inspirations.
