Verses 1-4Verses 1-7

ATTRACTION OF QUREYSH TO KAABA!
VERSES NO. 1-4
Since the previous sura was describing the story of destruction of People of Elephant and the host of Abraha who had departed for ruining the House of Kaaba, the first verse is a complementary to the Elephant sura and says: The People of Elephant were punished for the attachment of Qureysh to this sacred land and preparing the conditions for appearance of Prophet (SA).
Qureysh and all people of Mecca were residing there for its centrality and security. Many people of Hejaz went there every year and performed Haj ceremonies, had economic and literal exchanges and benefited various blessings of this land.
All of advantages were owned to its special security and if it was damaged by campaign of Abraha and such like, or the House of Kaaba was ruined, none could attach this land anymore.
The attachment of Qureysh to this sacred land could imply that they may not forget their love and attachment to this sacred center during their summer and winter journeys and cause them to return to it for its security and to avoid being impressed by the advantages of living in Yemen and Syria and evacuating Mecca. It may also refer to attachment among Qureysh and other people during these two great journeys, because people looked at them more honorably after story of Abraha and rendered a high significance and respect to the caravan of Qureysh.
We know that there was not any agriculture in Mecca and animal husbandry too was limited there. The major part of their income was gained through the commercial caravans. They departed towards south during winter, that is, Yemen, where it was relatively warm, and towards north during summer, that is, Syria, where had a moderate and desirable weather. On the other hand, both Yemen and Syria were among the important centers of commerce at that time and Mecca and Medina were the connection ring between them.
Of course, Qureysh did not deserve so much divine blessing and affection for committing the offenses, but since it was destined for Islam and Prophet (SA) to appear from their tribe and that sacred land, God bestowed them this favor.
In one hand, they were granted with prosperity in commerce and gaining, and on the other hand insecurity and loss was warded off them. These two objectives were realized with defeat of Host of Abraha. In fact, it was fulfillment of prayer of Abraham, the founder of Kaaba, but they did not appreciate the blessings, and changed the Sacred House to an idol house. They preferred worship of idols to the Lord of House, and finally saw the ominous result of so much ingratitude.
