Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
verses 1-5verses 6-8

OCCASION OF REVELATION
VERSE NO.1-5
As to the occasion which the verse was revealed, it has been narrated that:-
``When the prophet set out for the expedition of KHAIBAR, he appointed NAMILAT-IBN-ABDOLLAH, for his vicegerent in Medina during his absence. OMAR objected to the appointment, and nominated another person for that position! The verse (NO.1) revealed to warn Moslims not to put themselves forward before God and His apostle:-
``O, you who have believed! Consider nothing prior to Allah and His Messenger and beware of Allah Who is All-hearing, All-knowing.''
As to the second verse, it is narrated that a group of the tribe of Banitamim in accompany with their chiefs came to Medina to see the prophet. When they entered the prophet's Mosque, the prophet was at rest in his dwelling room that was built round the Mosque.
These uneducated Arabs began to shout rudely saying:-
``O, Mohammad come out of your room, we want to have a chat with you!''
When the prophet came, out they said to the Messenger of God:- ``We have come here for self-glorifying!?''
In the pre-Islamic era, it was customary among Arabs to hold self-glorifying meetings. The show was so that two groups of them in a meeting would pride in the acts of their ancestors through poetries.
What else the polite Messenger of God could do to a group of impolite people, except to listen and then to talk to them in their own language?
They rehearsed their poems of pride, and the prophet gently listened to them. Then HESSAN-IBN-SABIT answered them in a more eloquent language, with the prophet's permission. The prophet also gave some presents to the rude guests. They were attracted by prophet's kind and gentle behaviour, and most of them were converted.

COMMENTS
A series of ethical and disciplinary instructions have been given through the above passage that all the civilized people will have to observe. These instructions are particularly incumbent upon Moslims to do.
- Taking no precedence of Allah and His Messenger. The thing that first of first has to be done is to obey God and His Messenger, and to please them by that obedience. A Moslim should do nothing out of the scope of God's approval. Then, respecting the prophet will have the priority. Raising your voice above the voice of him is a major sin. Even it is a bad ethicallty to raise up your voice at the presence of your parents or teachers.
Moslims are taught here to be polite before their spiritual leaders, particularly in the case of the prophet, they should behave with a profound respect mingled with love and awe. They should consider nothing prior to Allah and His Messenger. A bad manner is to talk loudly before those who must be respected. Such kinds of impolite conducts may nullify the value and reward of good services. Those who truly respect their prophet they have piety in their hearts. Even a governor or a general will not overlook calling him loudly and rudely-but so was the behaviour of Arabs with our beloved and truthful prophet, and after him to his household.
