Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 1-5Verses 6-8

OCCASION OF REVELATION
VERSE NO. 1-5
The prophet's wives in spite of their high piety and purity, were after all a human being, and could be subject to the weaknesses of their sex.
Being too young for her position as the mother of the believers, AISHA, due to lacking caution and prudence, sometimes did something that the prophet disliked, and his mind was distressed.
HASFEH too, who was UMAR's daughter was none the better. When the two combined in secret counsel, or disclosed secrets to one another, they caused much sorrow to the Messenger of God.
Once the two conspired against ZAINAB the third wife to the prophet, who occasionally served her husband with a fine sweet smelling honey. HASFEH and AISHA were jealous of ZAINAB's privileges, and after a plot, asked the prophet slyly if he had been served with a fetid Arabic gum!?
She knew well that the prophet disliked bad smelling things, and would never use them. The All-knowing informed His Messenger of the trick of his wives, and their assertion vexed the prophet who treated all his wives with utmost justice and affection.
The narrators say that, the prophet swore to abstain from serving honey, and hence the above verses revealed to reproach HASFEH and AISHA, for their plot against the Messenger of God.

BLAMING PROPHET'S WIVES
VERSE NO 1-5
The prophet belongs to the whole community of Mankind, and therefore the smallest conspiracy against him is not to be easily overlooked. Therefore, this important matter is the theme of the above verses and the whole SUREH:-
``O,prophet! Why do you forbid yourself from that which Allah has made it lawful to you, for the pleasure of your wives.''
More details about the occasion is given by the following verses, from which we may conclude that some of the prophet's wives had not been faithful to his secrets, and had annoyed him practically! The verses also imply that prophet was so gentle and generous that he made known only a part of their divulgence to them, and not all of it!
In the forth verse above,we read:-
``If the two repent to Allah, it will be better for them, because their hearts have strayed from the truth.'' As to who were the two wives who conspired against the Messenger of God? According to a tradition related by successive witnesses, they were Aisha the daughter of ABUBAKR, and HASFEH the daughter of UMAR, whose father's later on, became the first and the second Khalif of Islamic Empire.
The Arabic ``SALIHUL-MOMENINE'' translated to, ``RIGHTEOUS BELIEVERS'' literally means the true believers who have a good and godly deed, and conduct the best example of which in Islam is ``HAZRAT IMAM ALI (AS) whom no one can ever excel in good and righteous deeds.
