Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 16-20 Verses 21-23

WE FAVOURED THE ISRAELITES SO MUCH, BUT....
VERSE NO.16-20
In this passage, reference is made to six great favours that God bestowed on the children of Israel; but they lost them through their ingratitude. They then left the right way of God and went astray. Then they fell into schism and differences, due to mutual envy, and insolence against God. So they lost all they had enjoyed.
The said favours were as follows:-
1- They received God's Revelations and scriptures which showed them the right way of religion.
2- God gave them Kingdom and Judgement.
3- The prophethood was among them.
4- They were provided with clean and good sustenance.
5- They surpassed other nations in good qualities.
6- And evidences; such as the miracles of Moses, and the signs and symptoms of their future Arch Prophets, like Jesus and Mohammad, which they had in their Scriptures.
In other words, the Israelites received the Scriptures through Moses, and the Kingdom and judgement, through Solomon and David; and several apostles like Daniel and Jeremiah were raised from among them for warning and monition. So they excelled other nations in good qualities. But they lost their unity and brotherhood, and fell into schism and variances! They differed due to their mutual insolent envy; and turned away from the direct way of Allah, and went astray. The Jews were indeed blameworthy for falling from the Grace, after all the wonderful favours that God bestowed on them. It was only God then, Who had to judge between them, touching that in which they differed.
