OCCASION OF REVELATION
VERSE NO.6-8
The prophet sent one of his disciples named, ``VALID-IBN-AGHABEH'' to the tribe of, ``BANI-MOSTALAGH'' in order to collect their alms-tax. When the inhabitants of the said tribe were informed that the representative of the prophet was coming to them, they decided to respect and welcome him, and with this aim, they went out to meet him in his way when coming.
In the pagan era there had been a serious conflict and enmity between Valid and Bani-Mostalagh, and he thought that they were coming out to injure or kill him without being sure of what he guessed. He therefore fled back to the prophet, and said:- ``The tribe had abstained from giving alms tax, (THE TITHE) and had come out to arrest him,'' and so he had to escape them.
The prophet sent one of his military officers named; ``KHALID VALID'' to the tribe, and told him:- ``Do not act with unwise haste.''
Khalid went near the tribe at night time, and sent some investigators to see what was going on.
Then it was proved that the whole tribe of Bani-Mostalagh had sincerely submitted, and adopted Islam, and that; Valid's report had been based on his suspicions and conjectures, and to this effect the verse revealed that:-
``O, you who believed! If a debaucher came to you with a report, make sure of its truth, lest you should harm a people unwittingly.''
All reports that are received must be ascertained of its truth, because the distance between truth and falsehood is about half a span, or the distance between our ears and eyes. Therefore, when Valid gave that false report to our prophet, some of the hardliners among Moslims insisted that the prophet should let them to fight with the said tribe, but the prophet rejected, and the proposers of war were offended, and hence the verse:-
``Know that the Messenger of God is among you. If he should follow you...''
