Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 1-4Verses 5-11

WE MADE MAN OUT OF A WORTHLESS SPERM DROP
VERSE NO. 1-4
Most of this chapter is about the blessings of Paradise, but it begins with a mention of the creation of Man from a worthless sperm-drop:-
``There elapsed a long period of time on Man, when he was not a thing worthy of mention.''
True, that Man was not in the world of creation a thing to deserve being mentioned, but he did have a great value in the knowledge of God or else, God would not create him at all.
What is the foundation and object of Man's creation?
Long before Man could be something worthy of note, the physical world existed, and all the elements of which Man's body was composed, were found here and there and everywhere.
The spiritual world too existed far before Man could be something able to think or commit a knowledge into his memory and mind.
A super Being, All-knowing, All-wise and All-mighty created Man and gave him the gift of certain faculties of receiving guidance and insight.
By his virtues, piety and undersanding, he managed to leave behind the animal life, and make for evolution and perfection. He became, as good example of Man, Hazrat Imam Ali (AS). He is indeed one of the most perfect examples of Mankind throughout the history of Man about whom this Sureh of Quran has been revealed.
The Arabic, (AMSHAJ) means mixed, mingled, blended or made up of dissimilar parts. In the case of the sperm-drop, it may refer to the female ovum that has to be fertilized with the male sperm before a new moving creature is created. It also may mean that Man is made of dissimilar qualities and abilities.
