Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 13-18 Verses 19-22

VERSE NO.13-18
``And verily he saw Him once again, by SADRATOL-MONTAHA.''
Sadrat, literally means lotus tree, but here it is definitely a figurative word because it has been narrated that our prophet said:
``When I reached the Sadrat, I saw that at the shade of each leaf of the tree a nation lived!''
This definition implies that it is not anyhow the like of a lotus-tree that grows on the earth:
``Near Sadrat, is the Garden of abode.''
We do not think that the GARDEN OF ABODE mentioned in the above verse, is the promised Paradise. Because Paradise is defined in QurÌn to have an extent equal to all the heavens and earth:
``And hasten to Forgiveness from your Lord, and the Paradise, the width of which is that of the heavens and the earth.''
S-3:133
Most probably this might be a special abode in the Intermediate world which is allocated to the souls of the believers, the righeous and martyrs. No one will enter the Promised Paradise before the Resurrection Day and its Final Judgement.
THE ASCENSION IS AN INDISPUTABLE REALITY
In the reality of our prophet's ascension to the heavens, there is no doubt or dispute among the Islamic learned, scholars and writers.
QurÌn too testifies to that in the s-17. Only some have doubt whether the night journey was corporeal or spiritual.
Besides the true traditions that are not contradictory with QurÌn, wisdom and knowledge; there are also some superstitious tradition about the ascension that have been forged by unaware or spiteful people, and vulgars such as saying: ``In this ascension the prophet has seen Allah with his corporeal eyes.''
In his night journey, when the prophet was very near to Allah, he asked many questions to which Allah answered. Some of these questions are as follows:-
Q:-What is the best of deeds that a servant can do?
A:-To put his truth on Me, and to love one another for the sake of Me.
Q:-(What about your love?)
A:-My love is the love of My poor and needy servants. Approach them and I will approach you!
Q:-My Lord! Who are counted among the folk of this material world, and who are among the folk of the Hereafter?
A:-The folks of this material world eat too much-laugh too much-sleep too much and enrage too much. They do not beg pardon for their wrongs. They are lazy at worship and brave in sinning......
On the other hand, the folk of Hereafter (who live in Paradise), are modest. Their ignorance is not much. They have much profit for other people. They create no trouble for other people. They consider and think on their words with care. Their eyes sleeps, but their hearts is awake!

MORE ABOUT THE NIGHT JOURNEY
Almost all the Islamic historians, writers and scholars, have written something about the prophet's ascension. The Sureh 17 of QurÌn begins thus:
``Glory be to him who took His servant (Mohammad (SA) from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest temple, whose surroundings. We have blessed in order to show him some of our signs.''
It has been narrated that Gabriel brought down a strange creature on which the prophet rode to Jerusalem, in the night of 17th Ramazan, 18 months before Emigration. The creature was named ``BORAGH''.
Gabriel accompanied the prophet up to some height near to the Sadratol MontahÌ, and then he left him alone for his Lord to lead him on.
In this seat of the earliest revelation in the temple of Qods, Mohammad(SA) met with some of the previous arch prophets like Abraham his forefather, Moses and Jesus.
From the temple of Solomon, he was taken up to the seven heavens, and then to the sublime Throne which lays out of space and time.
The journey resembled somehow to the Divine Comedy written by Dante.
In this journey, which was out of space/time the prophet saw the future and the past as present. He travelled throughout of the heavens and saw Paradise and Hell.
The whole long journey took no more time than only for a twinkle of an eye. This incident reminds us of the twins of professor Albert Einstein, one of whom travelled for 30 years with the speed of light, but when she returned, she was still the newly born infant, whereas her twin sister who had lived upon the earth was a lady of the age of 30.
In the first sky the prophet saw Adam and Eve. Then, Gabriel introducted him to some of the angels up there. One of them was very stern with a grim angry face! The harsh angel was introduced to be the guidance of Hell. Then the prophet was guided for a walk over the first sky which also contained the Hell in it. In that walk, the prophet saw many strange incident and sceneries.
There, he saw a group of people with very thick lips that were hanged down like that of camels. They were eating hot burning coals! The prophet was told that they were those who had eaten the properties of the orphans without any right.
Further on, the prophet saw a group of women hanged by their breasts, and he was told; these are the wives who had betrayed their husbands.
In the upper skies, once again our prophet met with the arch prophets; Jesus, Moses and spoke with them.
He then reached the seventh sky and came by the SADRAT-AL-MONTAHHA, near which lays on example of Paradise or what QurÌn has named the GARDEN OF ABODE:
``For those who fear the majesty of their Lord there are two gardens planted with shady trees, and watered by flowing springs. In them will be fruits of every kind. They shall dwell with beautiful virgins whom neither man nor Jinn have ever touched.
s-55:46-69

When our prophet reached near the tree of Sidreh, he found it to be awfully beautiful, and so extraordinary large that under the shade of its leaves a large nation could live!
When they reached the wonderful tree of Sidra, GABRIEL left the prophet to ascend alone with the guidance of his Lord? ``If I come up any further,'' said the angel, ``My wings will burn out.''
This implies that Man may reach to a rank higher than even the Arch Angel of God.
Anyhow, the prophet left behind the GABRIEL, who is the symbol and personification of wisdom, and went still higher and higher with the wings of love!
Mohammad (SA) returned from his night journey at the same instant that he sat out! His mount's name was BORAGH which denotes to Electric or light. Can we say that he travelled with the speed of light or more? And can we say that the theory of relatively is true, and he who travels with the speed of light will have or feel NO TIME!? Or the road was out of time and space.
Next morning, the prophet gave the news of his night journey to his wife OMMI-HANI. She told that I do believe you because I know you never lie, but please don't narrate the occasion to the heathens and unbelievers, who will make a laughing stock of it. The prophet said :``I will say to everyone that curious incident, and let them do or say whatever they want.''
When the prophet narrated the story of his ascension, and his travel from Mecca to Jerusalem in one night, some people who were sure that it was impossible to travel that long distance in one night, asked him to give them evidence to prove it.
The prophet said:
When I was returning from Jerusalem to Mecca, I passed by two caravans who were in their way back to Mecca too.
When I reached the first caravan which was nearer to Jerusalem, their camels were frightened and shied by the strange noise that my mount (BORAGH) uttered. Because of that noise, the camel scattered and they lost one of their camels who had escaped for fear! Then, I showed the camel master where his camel was gone.
Then, I left the first caravan and reached the mountains of ZAJNAN(some 30 miles from Mecca)where the second caravan had camped.
``I was very thirsty,'' continued the Messenger of God; ``and found the Caravan Captain fallen asleep with a pot of drinking water besides him. I drank the water and put the empty pot in its place. Soon after the caravan woke up and proceeded to drink water, but he found his pot empty! He was astonished that what had happened to the water on the port?''
``Sooner or later the two caravans reached Mecca and the incidents were checked and proved to be right.''
