Verses 15-20Verses 21-24

OCCASION OF REVELATION
VERSE NO. 15-20
*****
THE BANISHMENT OF QAINUGHA
The immediate reference in the above passage might be to the Jews of the clan of QUAINUGHA, who were expelled from Medina a few months before the Jews of Bani-Nazir.
They too lived in their fortified township near Medina. They were a wealthy clan whose occupation were generally goldsmiths and traders. They had their enough warriors and veterans, and had their secret intrigues against the Messenger of God and his followers.
A few months after the victorious battle of Badr, our prophet went to the famous market of QUAINUGHA, and preached the Jews saying:-``Beware of the wrath of God, lest he may punish you as He punished GHORAISH in the battle of Badr.
In that bloody war, there are lessons to be taken. All of you know that I am the Messenger of God, and you do have the information in your holy Books on which Allah has made a covenant with you about me.''
In answer to the Messenger of God, they rudely said:- ``O, Mohammad! Don't you ever think of us to be as weak as GHORAISH. Also do not even boast for defeating a group of people who knew nothing of warfare. If you come to fight us, we shall teach you a good lesson to change your mind forever about our Jewish brothers.''
A few days later, a Moslim woman went to buy some ornament in that famous Jewish market. When she was busy in selection of a piece of gold, a rascal young Jew made a fun and fastened her skirt to her waist by a thorn from behind so that when she got up,a part of her body was exposed! She was then made a laughing stock;and touched to the quick of a young Moslim who was watching them.
The young Moslim attacked the perpetrator and killed him, and a fierce quarrel broke out and the young Moslim too was slayed.
This incident caused the newly converted Moslims to loose temper and decided to take vengeance at any price.
The prophet soon took the control and prevented the youngesters from doing something unwisely. After some military consultations, the prophet ordered the Moslim forces to besiege the Jewish fortresses. The seige continued for 15 days, and eventually the Jews surrendered without any terms or conditions.
Some of the hardliners among Moslims proposed: their men be slayed, their women and children enslaved; and their properties and cattles confiscated. But the prophet did not agree with that and gave them a 3 days respite to leave the place. They were allowed to take their women and children with them and also a horse or camel load of their expensive properties.
The Jews were so compelled to move away and were banished to Syria. Hence the verse:-
``The fate of Bani-Nazir is the same as those JEWS OF QUAINUGHA who shortly before them, tasted the evil results of their deeds, and for all of them is a painful punishment.''
TRANSLATOR'S NOTE
DO NOT GO TO THE WELL WITH THE ROPE OF SATAN
The argument about the Jews and their treasons and hypocrite allies still continues:-
``The fate of the Jews are just like those who were shortly before them, tasted the evil consequences of their deeds and for them all is a painful punishment.''
Then, there is the similitude between the hypocrites and Satan, their comrade:-
``They are just like Satan who said to Man:-``Disbelieve!'' Then, when Man disbelieved, Satan said to him:-``I am rid of you! I am afraid of Allah the Lord of the worlds.''
The denial of God was not merely in their word. It was more in their acts. Then, what can the end of Satan and his associates be, except Fire and Torment?
Finally, the believers are addressed in the passage, saying:-
``O, believers! Beware of Allah and see what are you sending forth for tomorrow-in your life to come.
The Arabic ``TAGHVA'' means piety, self-restraint, avoiding all sorts of evil and sins, wrongs and unjustice. Piety is supported by remembrance of God and considering the consequences of what we are doing. We must control our acts so that, if we put all our deeds upon a tray, and put the tray on our head, and pass through a crowded street, we need not to put a cover on the tray so as to conceal whatever we have done, secret or open!
