OCCASION OF THE REVELATION (VERSES NO. 19 - 22)Verses 23-24

THE CRITERION FOR HONOUR

Although the verse has a certain cause of revelation, it is also a complementary to the preceding verses. It is cited in the history that in the Pagan Era the position of providing water for the pilgrims (SEGHطYAT) and that of holding the key and custody of Kaabeh were two important and honoured positions among the idolaters; but in Islam such external positions are not comparable to faith in Allah, His Messenger, the life to come, and doing good and righteous deeds, such as performing the prayers, giving alms- tax, and fighting in the way of Allah. In the sight of Allah giving water to a thirsty pilgrim, or repairing a mosque is of course a good deed with a certain reward, but it is only some external work that may not touch the heart and soul of man. On the other hand, having faith in Allah and His prophet, and in resurrection and Day of Doom; and also striving in the way of God with person and property has a greater reward and value.

The custodian and the water carrier by their show, may attract the respect of those who consider such services as piety, but in the sight of God, the case is different. He cares not for outward show and word as He cares for the internal state and sincerity in the heart. Striving and fighting for the cause of God, involves self- sacrifice and martyrdom, the essence of which consists of true and sincere faith, that cleanses the soul of man from selfish and worldly motives, and prepares and purifies the heart for the love of God.

The rewards for such sincere believers is immense and `great' as the Holy Quran says, consisting of God's special Mercy and Favour, the man's own pleasure, Gardens of Bliss, and more than that, God's, nearness and consent.

It is indeed awfully beautiful, to apprehend the presence of our Gracious, Kind, and Merciful Lord Who is the Source of all beauties and bounties!
