Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 02)
Verse 165Verses 1-3

VERSE NO. 165

This is the last verse of the chapter commented. It mainly turns around the importance of Mankind and his rank and dignity upon the earth. He is said to be the`KHALIF' of God down here!

The Arabic `KHALIF' means vicegerent, agent, representative, and a viceroy who may govern a country or province, as the representative of his king. The word may also mean, `successor' and all the shades of meaning return to the same root, and denote the same meaning.

Therefore man is appointed as the representative of God upon the earth, and all the power, wealth and resources of the earth are put in his charge and under his control. He should therefore avoid losing such a high position and falling down, and lapse in conduct and morality, to a level below or equal to that of the animals and plants, or any other creature than himself.

The verse then points at the variances of the merits and differences of Man in their power, wealth, strength, health and etc., some of which have been given to them naturally, and some they have earned in a right or wrong way:

``And it is He who has appointed you viceroies in the earth, and raised some of you in rank above some other that He may try you in what He has given you.''

Had all men been the same thing in all aspects and respects, like pieces of clothes, or ceramics, and potteries that are produced in the same factory and with the same machine; there would be no movement or motion on purpose, and by any love and need; and as a consequence of that, there would be no ground for progress and development. The variances and differences, whatever they be, are effective means to bring to action and practice, all the potentials and possibilities of mankind, and for this, main object is, God's trial of man. Therefore, our differences, and variances, physically or spiritually, are all based on God's justice and universal plans.

Another point in this verse which is worthy of note and attention, is theVICEGERENCY of man upon the globe. Man is appointed as the representative of God upon the earth and all the other creatures are his subjects and in his charge and under his control! Man is the acting governor for the kingdom of God upon the earth. It is evident that a representative is not the absolute owner of his king's ownership and possessions, and he cannot act independently, except in the limited measure that his Lord has authorized him. Here is where Islam gets remarkable distance from the camps of communism and capitalism. This is because the communism recognizes the society as the obsolute owner of things, and in the sight of capitalism, the individual is the real owner. On the other hand, a Muslim knows Allah as the ABSOLUTE OWNER of everything, and also its final heir; and man is only the depository and trustee, with a temporary ownership of whatever he owns.
