VERSE NO. 98Verses 100-103

VERSE NO. 99

This is the last verse of its kind, which is to attract our attention towards the creator, through His wonderful artistry and strange techniques in creation. It begins with one of the most important bounties and gifts of God to man, and that is the vegetation.

``Allah sends down water from the sky, and thereby brings the buds of all sorts of plants.''

By the `SKY' up, and overhead is wanted.

Worthy of note that Allah brings forth from the same soil and water, such a wide variety of vegetables, plants and fruits that are indeed amazing! They may look alike in their species but each of them varies in flavour, shape, colour, size, taste, juice and oil contents! Even in each variety of them, individuals are different, just like mankind, that you cannot find two men or two women to have exactly the same shape or similar picture and form!

By this immense variety of plants, vegetables, grasses and herbs God, the Sustainer, feeds the immense variety of animals and other creatures that leave in the land or in the sea.

Not only the greens on earth are grown by the blessings of the rain; that in the depth of the sea, too, minute species of greens are grown by its droplets which are suitable food for some creatures who live in the water! God, the All-knowing Merciful, has encouraged man to study the rules and natures of the growth of the plants, by giving some examples and instances in this verse (No. 99):

``Then from the buds of the plants we brought out green leaf, out of which We produce grains heaped out in harvest, and from the palm- tree, out of its spathe come clusters of dates within reach .... Look upon their fruits when they begin to bear it, and its ripening, and study the signs of God.''

(Fruits form an important part of the diet of people in all parts of the world except in the coldest arctic area. Fruits are valuable nutritionally because of their high vitamin, pectine, and mineral contents, as well as for the bulk they provide.

Holy Quran, through the above verse (No. 99), and many other verses, has commanded Muslims to pay attention to fruits and their creation and growth, and to their uses, and so many advantages for mankind and all other creatures. In order to give a scientific explanation in this matter, I have quoted a brief description about fruits in general, from the International Encyclopedia which follows:

`A fruit is the final result of plant reproduction, and begins to development after the ovules, or eggs within the ovary have been fertilized by pollen. Then a fertilized ovule becomes a seed. The number of seeds in a fruit corresponds to the numbers of ovules.'

There are many different kinds of fruits, classified by the numbers of ovaries that contribute to their formations, to the structure of the fruit, and the parts of the flower - other than ovary - that shares in fruits development.

Simple fruits are those that arise from a single ovary. So far several kinds of simple fruits have been recognized. A dry fruit is formed when the ovary walls mature into a dry, after brittle covering for the seed or seeds within. A dry fruit that splits open when it is fully matured is called a dehiscent fruit.

Dry dehiscent fruits typically contain many seeds, as in the soybean and mustard.

A second type of fruit is the fleshy fruit which is formed when the ovary becomes soft and juicy during its development. Two types of simple fleshy fruits are recognized. When the entire ovary wall becomes soft and pulpy; at maturity the resulting fruits is called a berry. Tomatoes, bananas, cucumbers, oranges, and watermelons are berries. If while it is maturing, the ovary wall becomes differentiated into three distinct layers - a thin outer skin - a thick fleshy central layer - and a hard stony interior layer. The resulting fruit is called, `Drupe'. The olive, plum, cherry, peach and almonds are drupes.   TRANSLATOR'S NOTE)
