THOSE WHO SHED TEARS FOR THE LOVE OF JIHAD

VERSES NO. 90 - 93

In this group of verses reference is made to two groups of people:

A group of hypocrites with lying excuses, and faithless cowards, whose intention was to stay back.

And a group of sincere believers who were indeed eager to take part, but were excused. These were:

      1) The weakling, who are physically weak like the old ones.

      2) The sick. 3) And those who are too poor to afford any expenses. 4) The fourth group are those who went to the prophet to mount them. They were so eager to go with the prophet, that when they were excused, their eyes overflowed with tears of sorrow.

There also came to the prophet some of the Desert Bedouines with their excuses to be exempted. These people of desert, naturally loved war, and would have followed a standard of war even if no question of faith or sacred cause was involved. Therefore, their excuses were true. They indeed differed from the hypocrites who refrained with lying excuses and held themselves back!

It is narrated that one of the sincere believers came to the prophet in the occasion ofTABUK and said:

``I am very old and blind too. I have no one to take my hand and lead me in the field of JIHAD. Am I excused or have to attend?''

The prophet kept quiet and did not answer him. Then the above verses were sent down, classifying five groups, of which four groups were exempted that we mentioned above.
