Verses 31-32VERSE NO. 32

VERSE NO. 31

This verse consists of a general instruction for every one and all ages; that, when they go to mosque for prayer, which is a public place, they should be clean neat and well dressed. They are even advised to use perfume, and sweet smelling scents, which was always used by our prophet S.A.

In Mohammad's religion, no one can claim sanctity by being dirty, not combed, and habitually negligent of neatness, specially in dress or person. Many a time our prophet S.A. did say that: ``Cleanliness is next to Godliness.''

Here the Arabic word; `ZINAT' may imply both physical and spiritual adornment - All the things which may inrease our beauty in appearance and inner self.

The next part or phrase of the verse points out to other bounties of God - the food and drink: ``Eat and drink, but do not squander, that Allah loves not the squanderer.''

Good, clean and wholesome food has not been forbidden to any one in Islam, but going to extremes and excess is prohibited, and not loved by God: ``But do not squander that Allah loves not squanderers.''

One has to be temperate and moderate concerning food and drink. Moderation in everything is a habit seriously enjoined by Islam, and therefore we must be cautious about excess and gluttony. Going to extremes and out of bounds, is something harmful and unbecoming in any way, but being gluttonous is the worst.

The Arabic word, `ESRطF' is a comprehensive one which may mean squandering, wasting, excess, going to extremes and etc. It also means to spend lavishly, and here in particular gluttony is aimed; and he who eats and drinks voraciously and to excess.

This very simple and short verse of Quran, which bids us to ``eat and drink, but go not to excess'', nowadays, proves to be one of the most important principles of human health. Latest scientific researches have proved that, excess in food, is the source of most of our diseases. The excess of food, in overeating will not be attracted by our body, and neither will be repelled easily, and remaining there in the stomach, will cause trouble and become a source of sickness. The only means and medicine to cure such diseases is to be moderate and self-control in eating.
