HARSHNESS JOINED WITH MILDNESS (VERSES NO. 5)

When the four months of respite, during which the idolaters were not to be bothered, expired; four harsh orders have been issued, as how to deal with them. These commands are as follows:

1- To lie in wait for them in places of ambush and to bar their ways on.

2- To besiege them. (i.e. surround by armed forces in order to compel surrender)

      3- To arrest them.

4- And if necessary to slay them.

The infliction of either of the above four punishments depends on the conditions of, time, place, person, which the prophet or the true Imam can judge and decide.

According to Islamic Law, the freedom of belief and religion is applicable to the followers of Divine Law and religions, such as the Israelites, Christians, and Zoroastrains. It does not apply to idolaters, and such kinds of polytheists. Idolatary must exist not among mankind; because it disgraces man, and lowers his dignity and valour. It also is a deadening spiritual disease for man, who is supposed to be superior to animals.

In spite of all the above rigorous orders, still there has been left a room for repentance and amendment, even for the hostile idolater if he wants it:

``But if they repent, and perform the prayer and pay the alms- tax, then open the way for them, that Allah is Forgiving, Compassionate.''

Having faith is enough for paving the way of salvation to man, supposing the faithful be sincere and truthful. It is not easy to prove one's faith in something, unless it appears through his conducts. Therefore, if someone claims to have faith in Allah and His religion, he must show it somehow through his deeds; like, performing the daily prayers and paying the alms- tax and etc. If so, no Muslim has a right to belie him, or say to such a one, you are not a Muslim. No one should bar the gates of repentance and amendment, against God's servants; because God is All- forgiving Merciful, and He loves His creatures.

This is why we see that in the above orders of Islam, the harshness is joined with mildness, and hardness is mingled with kindness!
