KEEPING ALOOF OF VAIN DISCUSSIONS

VERSES NO. 68- 69

Although the prophet is addressed here, the instruction is general for all Muslims and all ages. Whenever in a meeting and discussion the truth is scoffed at, and the participators jeer at the Message of God, or at some other belief; a believer should not attend to such a meeting and discourse. The purpose of the commandment is evident; because the heathens would ridicule Muslims with contemptuous words, and despising gestures.

If Muslims kept aloof of them with indifference, they would have to shut up, and keep quiet. The main body of the command is not to sit in such a company, and if they find themselves in it; they should get up at once, and show their disapproval with indifference, and cold blood. Even if they forget, taking not part in such disputes, they should raise up when they remember. The next verse suggests an exception, that a Muslim prepared with the aim of admonishing and advising, may take part in such a company; expecting to turn them from evil. In such a case nothing of their account will fall upon the believer, and even if he fails in his purpose; he still will have his reward for his good intention.
