Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 02)
Verses 134-136Verse 137

Here the reaction of the people of Pharaoh against the admonishing actions of God has been cited:

``When a plague was sent upon them they said to Moses; pray to your Lord for us, to remove the plague, and instead of that we will believe you and let you take away the children of Israel.''

But as soon as Moses prayed and the plague was removed, they went back to their evil attitude until the final punishment of God seized them.

The phrase; `WHEN THE APPOINTED TIME HAD COME' in the verse No. 135, implies that; When they begged Moses to intercede and pray to God to remove the plague, Moses gave them a date and appointed time for the end of that calamity. For instance he would say all the frogs will die next saturday, so that the suspicious Egyptains could not ascribe the removal of the plague to some other natural phenomena.

As to the phrase; `WE TOOK VENGEANCE' in the verse No. 136:

Vengeance is defined as a punishment inflicted in return for an injury or an offense. In other word it means paying back of an injury that one has suffered, to a greater degree than it is normal and just.

This is however not the case with God the Merciful who is far from spite and grudge, Whom no one can ever hurt or harm; or make Him to suffer from anything. When the Compassionate God sees that some of His servants oppress and injure some other of His servants who are defenceless, and have no guilt, God will take vengeance of the oppressors on account of His universal justice and plan.
