THE COMPULSORY CEASE- FIRE (VERSE NO. 36)

      In this, and the following verse, another rule of Islamic warfare is discussed;

      ``The number of the months with Allah is 12, in a year and so has it been since He created the heavens and earth. Of the twelve months four of them are Sacred in which war is prohibited.''

      A Solar Year is the period occupied by the earth in making its revolution around the sun, whose length is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45-51 seconds.

      The Lunar Year is a period of 345 days divided into 12 Lunar months. So Month is one of the twelve portions into which the year is divided. Originally the succession of months was governed by the recurrence of the lunar phases every 29.5 days.

      The prehistory lunar calendar consisted of months of 29 or 30 days. This is still the case in modern Muslim and Jewish calendar. The beginning of each month in the Muslim calendar is determined by the appearance of the first lunar crescent after new moon.

      There has been an old- established custom among the Arabs and Muslims of observing four months as those in which fighting is forbidden. This compulsory cease- fire is said to have been settled by ABRAHAM the father of many prophets.

      The four Sacred or Prohibited Months, are: ZUL-QAADEH, ZUL-HAJJEH, MOHARRAM, and RAJAB. It is worth to note here that, if a war is imposed upon Muslims in one of these four Sacred Months, they are not forbidden to defend and answer the enemies invasion, while self-restraint and being pious has always been recommended.
