THE ADMONITORY FATE OF THAMUD

VERSES NO. 73 - 79

Here is a concised story of the people of Thamud to whom Salih was sent as an apostle. They were successors to the culture as well as the evil deeds of Aad the story of whom was mentioned above. They lived in the North- West corner of Arabia between Medina and Syria, in a spacious plain consisting of large stretches of mountains and valleys. They were farmers with fertile lands, and good builders too; who could easily hew their mountains into safe and secure houses, with the progress of their physical life, they turned to lusts, and lost their morals, and eventually became godless and arrogant.

Allah sent Salih to them as a Messenger, in order to admonish and advise them, and give the warning for the consequences of their faithlessness and mischiefs.

According to some Islamic traditions, in answer to their request for miracle, and as a sign for his prophet hood, Salih miraculously brought a she- camel out of the rocks and said to them:

``Now there has come to you an evidence from your Lord. This is Allah's she- camel, as a sign for you. Leave here to graze on Allah's earth and let her drink out of the spring and touch her not with harm, that you may be seized by a painful punishment.''

Salih also advised his people to take lesson of the fate of their ancestors - i.e. the people of Aad, and follow not their footsteps.

Here again the haughty chieftains and influential disbelievers rejected the Message of truth, and tried to weaken the faiths of the lowly believers who followed Salih, but they failed. They therefore hamstrung the camel and killed her to blot out the miraculous sign of God, so as to induce doubt in the hearts of the believers, making them waver in their support for their prophet.

When so; the wrath of God fell upon them and a painful punishment seized them- A dreadful earthquake accompained by angry flashes of lightning scourged them when they were full asleep, and threw them prone to ground, and destroyed them with their safe and sound home, and whatever of properties they had!

Salih addressed the perished unbelievers and said: ``O, My People! I conveyed to you the Message of my Lord, and sincerely advised you, but you don't like sincere advisers!''

(Here in the last verse the deads are addressed by the prophet Salih!!

According to almost all Islamic historians, our prophet Mohammad too, at the end of the battle of BADR, did the same thing. In that battle all the seventy pagans that were killed, were thrown in one of the big wells of Badr, which was void of water; as per order of the prophet. When all the dead heathens were burried thus in that well, the prophet stood in front of the collective grave and addressing the dead heathens said:

``O, you residents of this well! O, Atbeh- O, Shaibeh - O, Abujahl! Did you find Allah's promise fulfilled? As for me, I have already found my Lord's promises fulfilled.''

The prophet's companions were amazed to hear their prophet speaking to the dead ones, and so they asked:

`O, Messenger of God! Are you talking to the dead bodies?!' The prophet answered: `Yes I do; and they all hear me as you do! Only they are not allowed to answer!''   TRANSLATOR'S NOTE)
