Verse 37Verse 38

VERSE NO. 37

In seeking excuses for their undue rejection of God's Message, the polytheists asked for new and particular miracles to suit their vain desires and weak minds. Every now and then they had seen another miracle and a newer one from the prophet, but they put forth flimsy pretexts, and asked for another sort of miracles, such as personification of the angels; turning the rocky mountains into gold or silver, or asking the prophet to make out for himself large gardens of fruits, like the gardens in his promised Paradise and, etc!

It was evident that they were not honest in their request. If they really wanted a sign to assure their heart, so many amazing miracles, besides the wonderful Quran were issued by the prophet. After all, signs were all round them: ``Each leaf of any tree is a book of evidence and knowledge, leading us to our creator.'' What a nice word has EDNA st. VINCENT MILLAY:

``God! I can push the grass apart,

And lay my finger on thy heart.''

When the pagans asked for particular miracles to suit their vain desires and ignorance; it was not given them for a twofold reason: 1) They always could make holes in anything that would descend to their level.

      2) God has always held a custom of punishing those who reject faith after enough evidence or wonderful miracles have been sent down to them.
