OCCASION OF REVELATIONVerses 75-78

VERSE NO. 74

The reference is to the plot hatched by the 12 hypocrites when the prophet and his forces were returning from TABUK. As we said in the previous verses their plot failed. So this verse is connected to the preceding verses.

The verse also states the ingratitude, and ill return of them for prophet's kindness and favours. Like most of the Muslims, they too, were enriched by the social justice, and general prosperity that was the outcome of the government established by the prophet in Medina. Now they were returning evil for good, and darkness for light. This was because, they could not accept the prophet's judgement of worth and merit, by piety and rigtheousness, rather than by birth, tribe, and position. In fact, man is apt to rebel and transgress all bounds, when he looks upon himself as self- sufficient! When they were enriched by the Grace of God through the guidance of His Messenger, their ingratitdue made them to renounce and resist the authority of the prophet, and they even conspired to overthrow him!

In spite of their evil plans, and taunts and lies, that fortunately all failed, the doors of repentance and God's forgiveness was not closed on them:

``Then if they repent; it will be far better for them. But if they turn away and continue with their mischiefs and intrigues, Allah shall punish them a painful punishment, in this world and in the life to come. Even in this life they will have no one to protect or help them against the wrath of Allah, except Allah himself.
