Verses 1-2VERSE NO. 2

INTRODUCTION TO SURA- 6

This is the sixty nineth SURA that was revealed to our prophet in Mecca. It was sent down at once and all together. The theme of the discourse is denying all sorts of polytheism and idolatries, and adhering to God and His oneness for salvation and prosperity.

VERSE NO. 1

The argument begins with celebrating the praise of God, who has created the macrocosm, and also the microcosm. Then the attentions are attracted towards Monotheism, admonishing the unbelievers who ascribe equals to their Lord, Creator and Cherisher.

The Arabic word, `YAADILUN from the root of ADL or ADALA, has various shades of meaning such as; 1) To hold something as equal to something else. 2) Justice and to deal justly between parties and individuals. 3) To turn the balance the right way and etc.

``Then those who disbelieve ascribe equals to their Lord!'' The adverb, `SOMMA translated to, `THEN meaning AFTERWARDS, implies that at the beginning of the creation, Men were monotheists, but afterwards they perverted and became polytheists with various idols and false gods.

Here, God in a blameful style says to His creatures that, ``I have created everything you see and you know. How can you then hold up any of my own creatures as equal to myself!?''

Darkness and light in this verse seem to be the symbol of truth and falsehood, that we must distinguish from each other.
