VERSE NO. 42

      The weak hearted Muslims, those with lack of faith, and the hypocrites, are addressed here; and their arts and excuses are disclosed; that, if there be an immediate gain and booty insight through an easy journey, they would come with the prophet.

      After all, they do not close up with their childish excuses and flimsy pretexts, but soon after they come swearing by Allah that they indeed were not able to attend the expedition. They say so, but God knows that they are lying. By their false oaths they destroy their souls and ruin their selves. Also by hanging back, they endangered their physical lives, because if their enemy could succeed, they all would have to suffer the misfortune and miseries of a frustrating defeat.
