VERSE NO. 62Verse 64

VERSE NO. 63

Here by this verse the Rabbis, literates, Doctors of the Law, and generally the priesthood are severly attacked and sternly admonished, that why are they so quiet when they see their people drowning in the lagoons of sin, evil, and wrong! Why don't they forbid their common people, and laymen, of their sinful acts and words; and eating unlawful things? Why have they forgotten and withheld the vital principle of persuasion for good, and dissuasion from evil? Quran considers all the men of knowledge who do not enjoin good, and forbid bad, as joint heirs of sin and crime!

This verse, as IBN- ABBASS has said, is the most threatening verse against the Christian Rabbis, and the Jewish Doctors of the law; and generally all literates and learned, be they a Muslim or a non- Muslim, if they sit silent and watch their people to drown in sin and evil deeds. HAZRAT ALI (AS) has said in one of his sermons inNAHJULBALAGHA:-

``The ancient people were destroyed by calamities because they were sinning and their literates and learned men kept quiet forbidding them not.''
