SHUAIB'S MISSION TO MIDIAN

VERSE NO. 85 - 87

The prophet Shuaib was a descendant of ABRAHAM, who was sent to the residents of Midyin- a city in the land of Syria.

The Medianites were traders and farmers. In race, they were Arabs, but being neighbours to Canaanites, they probably must have intermixed. Besides polytheism, these people were guilty of fraud and highway robbery. Their story has been narrated in several places in QURAN, and we hope to give more detail about them when we come to comment the chapter, HOOD.

Shuaib's identification with Jethro, the father in law of Moses has no warrant.

Among the Medianites, Shuaib began his mission with an attack on polytheism and idolatry, saying:

``O, my people! Worship Allah. You have no other God than Him.'' He then advised his people not to play with scales and measures: ``Observe the due rights of measure and scale.'' In other word, deal not in fraud by giving too little and asking too much in your commercial dealings. The prophet then advised the Medianites to stop their moral and social mischiefs like fraud, robbery, theft, and trickery.

THE GLORIOUS QURAN
