Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 37-40Verses 41-43

Here the Devine Rewards for those who believe and trust in God continues, beginning with their chastity:-

``And those who avoid Mortal Sins, and indecencies, and when they are angry, they forgive.''

The Arabic, ``KABÄ,ER'' which is the plural for, ``KABIR'', means big, large, great, important and etc.

But what can our measure and criterion be for the greatness of a sin?

Usually sins are considered in two classes in the religious terms. They are classified to Major=Mortal=Capital=or Great sin for the Arabic Kabir.

Then they are the; Minor=Small, or Venial sins, for the small sins.

Islamic Jurisprudents consider a sin to be Great or Mortal, when it has a threat of God's punishment behind it in Holy Qurän, Usury, Adultery, Calumny, Cursed by parents, and etc. are among Mortal Sins in the Doctrine of Islam.

Of course we should commit to memory that sin is evil, whether Mortal or venial, and we must not repeat it, or continue with it, for thinking it is a Minor Sin, and God will forgive. This is because:- ``Many a little make a mickle.''

Ordinarily, enough is for a Moslem to prosper; if he or she avoids Mortal sins; because no one is innocent or infalliable, unless the rare ones that Allah wants them so, for spiritual leadership; like the prophets and Imams. We are all peccable, and prone to sin. Even our first parent, Adam and Eve, proved to have been susceptible to Devil's Temptations!

For the men of God who are higher in spiritual degree, there is a strict standard, that the good conducts of the virtuous are the sins of those who are nearer to God.

The next verse points to other three qualifications of the men of God:- ``They earnestly and positively answer the call of their Lordِ They perform the prayer. They consult one another in their affair, and spend in charity some of what they have of sustenances.''

In other word; those who wish to serve God, are always ready to hearken to god's signs, and listen to the admonitions and advices of the men of god. They are determined to obey God, and do as their Lord has ordered them to do. They never forgot to perform the regular prayers. They conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and of what Allah Has given them as sustenance they offer some as charity and alms to the poor and needy.

This is a fact that, they serve God well who serve His creatures. Charity is among the best of services, that Man may offer to God.

HENRY WHEELER SHAW, has a nice saying:-

``The best investment I know of, is charity: You get your principle back immediately, and draw a dividend everytime you think of it.''

The man of God, in spite of having every right for retaliation and recompense of evil, and to defend themselves, yet they prefer to pardon and forgive, especially when they are very angry!

Here the word, ``CONSULTATION'' is the key word of this chapter of Qurän, from which is taken the name of the Sureh; ``THE COUNCILE''.

The seventh quality of the faithful servants of God that is mentioned here, is that, they defend themselvess when they are oppressed and treated with unjust rigor and cruelty. They help and are also helped by other believers, for being a duty incumbent on all Moslems to help their religious brothers and sisters. This is a strict warning to the oppressors, that, if they proceed to injure a Moslem, other believers will rise up against him, and other Moslems will not stay idle and inactive. Besides; Allah does not love oppressors.
