Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 34-38Verses 39-42

To console His prophet, God says to him:- ``You are not the only Messenger of Mine that is belied by the high-ups and men of power and man-power:-

``We did not send any warner into a town, except that, those who lived there in comfort, denied him and disbelieved in him.''

Their weak and flimsy reasons for their disbelief was that, we are dearers and nearers to God; because He has given us more children and wealth. He therefore will not punish us.

Whenever a Messenger of God came to warn Mankind the chieftains, and those with worldly power and wealth, stood against him, by their arrogance and false position. This was mainly because their social and unjust privileges, were attacked.

Their arrogance was based on their worldly power and rank, and they relied upon their children, and resources.

The next verse is a good answer to their frail logic:-

``Say:- ``My Lord increases the sustenance for whom He will, and restricts it for whom He will; but most of people do not know that.''

Therefore having more wealth is not a sign or a reason, that you are dear to God.

If we see some people void of knowledge, are very rich, or learned and educated men who are poor, it proves not that the rich is nearer to God than the poor.

It is Allah Who increases the sustenance for whom He will. And increase or decrease of wealth does not necessarily mean God's more favour or withdrawal of favour, to the rich or to the poor. Such distributions are in accordance with the universal plan of God, which is always wise and right; but our knowledge is not enough to reveal to us the secrets of God's Plan in the universe.

The measuring unit of being near to, or far from God, are not children, wealth, strength, beautiful house or magnificent cars. There is no physical distance between God and His servants and creatures at all. He is nearer to us than we or than the veins in our neck.

So the criterion for measuring one's spiritual approach to God is faithِgood and righteous deeds and piety.
