Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 26-30Verses 1-3

The above verse is a complementary to the past warnings to the sinners:-

``Is it not enough for their guidance that many of generations we destroyed before; and that they now walk in the ruins of their dwelling places?''

The history of the earlier nations; their experiences, and fate, are all signs of God, and lessons for us to take, so as to know how can we live a prosperous life.

So many useful lessons can be taught by the destroyed houses of Äd and Thamud, and the ruins and remnants of the cities in which the people of Lot one day lived.

Once upon a time, these were the dwelling places of a powerful people who drowned themselves in sin, disbelief, and walked on the roads proudly. They did not listen to the warnings of their well-wisher prophets and men of God.

The next verse (NO.27) points to one of the great blessings of God, which is the water. Allah sends down the rain and drives the water to the dry lands, and parched soil, to convert it into living land, bringing out crops to feed our cattle, and fruits for us to eat.

By its heavy nature the water should stay in the pits, wells and cavities in the ground unmoved, or at least sink down in the earth, but Allah drives it to the dry lands by His plan and knowledge so as to revive the dead lands.

Then the argument drives at the promised victory of the righteousness over evil, which the non-believers asked when is that?

``Say:- ``on the day of victory, their faith will not profit those who disbelieved, nor are they respited.''

The said victory cannot be the victories in the battle-fields, like that of the BADR, as some commentators have thought, or even the conquest of Mecca.

This is because in that day faith will not profit, where as the case is not so in the battle-victories. Even in the conquest of Mecca faith and return was a main factor of rescue, and profit.

This is also not true with Resurrection Day because the word, respite which is the ending of the verse (NO.29) is only valid in the life of this world and has no room in the Dooms day.

Therefore, this must be the day in which comes the extreme helplessness for the non-believers, by God's punishment that may come out of a sudden, and give no respite to the infidel, or even a little time to think and decide.

This is in fact a threatening to the oppressors who continue to transgress the limits, without paying heed to any advice or warning.

Then an end is given to this forewarning, by telling the prophet to wait and let the heathens to wait:-

``Then turn you away of them and waitِthey are waiting too.''
