Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 50-55Verses 56-60

Some of the obstinate Pagan Arabs whose pertinacity and ignorance, would not allow them to submit to the miraculous Qurän; asked for some kinds of other miracles that their foolish minds dictated to them. They ignored the grandeur of Qurän, and all the evidences that it carries, the rejection of which is indeed a dark blasphemy, and a cruel injustice. They asked for some miracles like turning the mountains of Mecca into gold, or removing them in order to make their place a farmland, or giving life to their ancestors, or turning a stick to a serpent, as Jesus and Moses did. In other word, it implies that they did not want to learn or to understand a useful matter, either physically or spiritually.

Without any doubt, our prophet has had many wonderful and different miracles apart from Qurän. These have been narrated in detail by historians and writers with clear evidences. The Pagan Arabs were not looking for miracles which in their sight could not be anything but sorcery. They wanted somehow to get rid of faith and forget the end and destiny, if there was any, like Resurrection and Final Judgement. In this relation we read in Qurän S 6:111:-

``And even if We had sent down to them the angels, and the dead had spoken to them, and We had brought everything together before them, they would not believe, unless Allah willed, and most of them ignore the truth.''

In other word the heathens were after some sort of a freedom to do whatever of crime they willed without any restraint and control.

In the next verse (NO.53), the reference is to another kind of foolish objection that the heathens said to our prophet:-

``Show us the punishment you promise, if you really can!''

The poor fellows did not think that God's Mercy and Grace gives us a respite and another chance for repentance and return, before His justice in the form of a scourge may seize us. God sends down to us the string of respite, that we may rescue ourselves by it, but unfortunately we use the string to hang ourselves with it.

Thus the heathens said to the Messenger of God:- ``If you are true in your claim then show us if you can, and hasten the punishment of which you speak!'' This is not unlike some children who are enjoying their play with Fire, or to some fools who enjoy to play with the tail of a wild lion! Of course God's plan will never follow our fancies, and will take its course in the most sure way. Therefore the challenge of the wicked for hastening the punishment of God has been answered through the verse NO.54 as an irony:-

``They ask you to hasten the punishment, while the Hell has encompassed the non-believers, and will soon cover them from all sidesِfrom above them and from beneath their feet.''

This is the dreadful punishment that they themselves have incurred by their evil deeds. They have to blame no one for that, except themselves, because the punishment of God is exactly that of His Justice, which has overtaken them.
