Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 8-9Verses 10-16

The above verses allude to natural Monotheism that is engraved in man's soul by instinct. When man is afflicted in an emergency case, his inner self or conscience, wakes up and the alarm of Monotheism begins to sound or flicker in his heart. He remembers his Merciful Lord and turns his attention seriously towards Him. He then calls his Lord for help with a pure faith:-

``When some sort of a loss touches man, he calls his Lord while turning to Him sincerely. But when He bestows a favour on him he....''

Loss and adversity are not as bad as we may think of them. God is mere goodness, and nothing can come of mere goodness and absolute existence, except beauty and good. More or less afflictions are natural trials that will add to our knowledge and experiences. They will show us to put our hidden and unused abilities in to work and function. Therefore, in misfortunes, we instinctively return to God, and earnestly ask him to help us.

Unfortunately as soon as our affliction is removed we turn back to ourselves, and when a little prosperity comes, we forget our past state and fervent prayer to the Merciful Lord!

We then begin to think of the secondary causes, and give them the credit of having removed our affliction apart from our Merciful God! These secondary causes, we may think to have been our own efforts, some natural power, or some foe or friends. We may forget that God is the first and the last cause of all things, and all phenomena - the cause of causes.

To set up rivals and co-sharers to Him in this way, will ruin our own soul and mislead many ignorant people.

In the next verse, there is a comparison between a believer and a non-believer with the conclusion that, they are not alike, as the light and dark are not alike:-

``Is he valuable who attends at some hours of the night in prostration and on foot in worship, taking care of the life to come, and hoping the Mercy of his Lord; or....?''

Leaving the sweet sleep and soft bed, in mid night when all are asleep, and every creature is quiet; so as to get into a humble devotion to God, is indeed a great virtue for man. Vanities of this world all forgotten, and with the hope of God's Mercy and Grace, the devotee prepares for the life to come.

Such sincere and pure worship in the dark of nights, are usually supported by good deeds of day.

How can we compare such a believer with a non-believer who is ignorant of the real values of spiritual life? Are those who know, and those who not know equal, or is the light same as dark?

A very useful lesson that we may take from the above verses is the importance of knowledge. To learn and to know more and more was the main object in all the prophets teachingsِof course they have thought a knowledge to make us understanding and humble, and to take us nearer and nearer to our Merciful Lord.

A knowledge that makes us haughty and puffed up with pride, does not worth a learning. That's the real knowledge which takes us out of our hands, and puts us in the hands of God.

There are various fields and branches of knowledge, but at least that knowledge is the best which profits people best, and that field of knowledge is the noblest of all; the object of which is the noblest. Therefore a man of reality and truth, must live his life either as a scholar or a student; that's the way of evolution.
