Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 15-17Verses 18-19

Sheba was a city of Yemen of which some historical events we have commented before, in volum four of this work in S-27. It was the encounter of Solomon with Belghais, the Queen of Sheba. The incident cited here-might have happened centuries later, in which they still lived a happy and prosperous life. But eventually they forgot their Lord and their duties and became thankless a people, and were punished for thanklessness:-

``Verily there was a sign for Sheba in their dwelling-place. Two gardens extended from their right and from their left.''

The people of Sheba through their knowledge and skill managed to control the wild floods that rushed down their mountains, and collected the wasteful water behind a great dam in order to make good use of it. They planned so that their canals were skirted by a series of gardens on both sides, right and left.

Thus their lands became pleasant to look at, and their people happy and prosperous. Extraordinary comfort, made them arrogants and they became ungrateful to their Lord. Perhaps they were divided to classes of poor and rich, high-caste and low-caste, disregarding the gifts of God.

They were warned and admonished by their Divine Teachers in order to be thankful for having such that clean land and Forgiving Lord.

Then there came a terrible and powerful flood after it rained cats and dogs for a couple of hours, and their dam broke, and soon after their fruitful gardens and flourishing farmlands turned into a waste! Their fruit-trees gave place to wild plants with bitter fruits:-

``They turned away from God, and We sent against them a destructive flood, and We changed their two gardens with other two gardens, bearing bitter fruits and desert shrubs; and a few Lot trees!''
