Verses 69-70POETRY

The pagan Arabs often charged our prophet of being a poet, but Allah, his Lord said:-

``We have not taught him poetry, nor it is becoming him.''

Mohammad (SA) never composed a poem. But the eloquency and attraction of Qurän was so powerful and penetrating, and its beauties and deep meanings so charming, that some of them called it enchanting sorcery, and other said it is poetry. Many a time it happened that a man of fame and influence heard a rehearsed of few verses of Qurän, and was eagerly converted! Of them we name Omar, the second Khalif as an example.

Arabs wondered what to call these curious verses that was revealed to Mohammad (SA) - a man unlettered who never attended a class to learn something about the art of reading and writing!

On the otherhand, with a deep and strange faith, he claimed to be the messenger of God and a warner. He strictly denied to know poetry. ``I am a man like anyone of Mankind. I am inspired with God's message and I am His obedient servant. My duty is to convey the Message. I warn the faithless sinners, and I have a good news for the believers having righteous deeds.''

He could not be a poet, and poetry was not becoming him, because the source of poetry is imagination and emotion, where as the source of Inspiration is realty, honesty and truth.

Poetry has a changing nature, where as Inspiration is the most stable truth, and firmly established fact

A poet may often sacrifice truth to maintain the beauty of his art, or the good order of rhyme and meter; but Inspiration is pure fact and bare truth.

Poetry is a collection of enthusiasm that will ascend to the skies from the earth, but inspiration is a series of facts, that descend from the skies to the earthِso these two phenomena have two distinct courses of action.

Of course there are some exceptions of the poets, who follow some sacred object in their poetries. These group of poets are true believers and remember God too much; and therefore they are in a different book of accounts, and we should not undervalue their art and skill.
