Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verse 50Verse 51

Here the immediate reference is to the prophet, and alludes to the seven cases which he was permitted to marry a woman.

Because of his exceptional position, and high responsibilities; the prophet's marriage differed from those of the ordinary Moslems. For instance the number of his wives, was not limited to four, and all his wives had to be believing Moslem women and emigrants with him too, whereas an ordinary Moslem may marry a woman from among the people of Scriptures.

Therefore, in the above verses the Messenger of God was permitted to choose a wife from the following seven classes of women:-

1)The women with dowers paid, which is the universal Moslem marriage.

2)The slave girl whose hand has owned according to the Law. (SAFFIYEH & JOWAIRIYEH, were two slave girl that the prophet bought their freedom, and then took them for his wives.

Among his wives, only Mary the Egyptian, was a prisoner of war)

3ِ6)His first causins...i.e., the daughters of his paternal and maternal uncle and aunts. None of these, too, could marry the prophet unless she had performed the emigration with prophet.

7)When a believing women offered to marry the prophet without demanding a dower, if the prophet too, was willing. Such a marriage was exceptionally lawful for the prophet; but a Moslem cannot marry a woman without a dower, however much or little.

Some narratives imply that among the prophet's wives, MAIMUNEHِZAINABِOMM SHARIK and KHOILEH, demanded no dower of him.

It is evident that such women were seeking spiritual honour and dignity by becoming the wife to the Messenger of God.
