Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 28-29Verses 30-33

From here on another episode of the story of Moses and Pharaoh begins, which is not found elsewhere in the Qurän. It is the incident of a believer who was among the courtiers of Pharaoh. He was one of the king's near kins, and he was concealing his faith in Moses. Some commentators have said that he was a cousin to the king of Egypt. He did not reveal his faith until he found the life of Moses in danger; when he stood manly in defence and by reasoning and logic, managed to change Pharaoh's mind, and saved the apostle's life:-

``What! Are you really going to kill a man for saying, God is my Lord!? Can you deny his miracles like his stick turning to a snake, or his shining white hand and his clear reasoning about our Lord?''

The identification of the believing courtier among the king's folk is not known to us. Whoever he was, he sternly asked his people to use their common sense, and do not plunge into the swamp of such a sinful act and murdering a guiltless personِkilling a man only because he says God is my Lord. He reasoned as an Egyptian who loved his people saying:- ``God will not guide and support a liar by giving him such wonderful miracles, as the stick and snake, or the shining white hand and other clear signs.''

Even if he tells you lies against God, he himself will have to suffer the consequences of his falsehood. But if he is telling you the truth, and he is really inspired by God, how can you ward off the wrath of God, that he promises to afflict you!?

O, My People! He said:- ``You must be more careful about this man, and find out what is with him, and what is not. At present the power and kingdom is yours, and he is not going to escape out of your hand. Let us then give him a respite and study his case a little deeper.''

Pharaoh rejected the advices of the well-wisher believer, because he was puffed up with pride and arrogance and said to the council:-

``I show you that which I see and I am leading you to the way of rectitude''ِhis rectitude was to slay Moses!

When it happened so, Moses said:-

``I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, from every proud who will not believe in the Day of Reckoning.''
