Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 41-45Verses 46-50

In the above passage the prophet has been addressed, with threatening the stubborn disbelievers, and consoling the prophet that:-

``If We take you away from among them, then we shall take vengeance on them.''

Here, ``taking the prophet from among them'' may mean his death.

Here the prophet has been ordered to grasp to that which has been revealed to him through inspiration. There is a saying:- ``You do your own duty and let God to do His'' you grasp the inspiration, and God has power over everything and everyone.

Then the reference is to the Holy Qurän, (V.NO.44):-

``And it is a, ``ZIKR'' for you and your people.''

``ZIKR'' is one of the several names of Qurän which is usually translated to, ``REMEMBRANCE''. It implies to put a thing in the mindِremembering a thingِto remind or recollectِto be continually regardful of God and His commandments. Or else to keep in the memory whatever God has revealed, and after all ZIKR means any kind of incantation and repeating continually one of the names of God.

Therefore, Qurän is also a reminder for awakening our memory.

Then to reject the idolatry, and to cross out all the polytheistic ideas, Qurän exhorts the prophet to ask of those Messengers of God, who had been sent before him; that God has never enjoined or admitted the worship of any deity of any kind other then Himselfِthe Only one God.

Here, the questioner is the prophet, and the object of question is all the Messengers that were sent before him, besides their followers even the opposition party among them. The question is about worshipping the idolsِthe false godsِand any deity or deified man, who is other than God; the Merciful Creator of Universe.

The prophet could have asked the Messengers who were sent before him, in his famous ascension to the heavens. There, when our prophet visited all the prophets who were sent before him; he did ask them the question.

Here from among Allah's so many beautiful names and attributes, the name, Merciful has been used to mean:- How does Man leave aside the Merciful God whose universal Mercy has covered everything and everyone and has grasped an idol or a helpless deity which can neither profit him, nor harm.
