Verses 13-16Verses 17-18

The stubborn unbelievers who denied so many clear signs are severely warned here:-

``Then if they turn away, say:- ``I warn you of a thunderbolt, like the thunderbolt that overtook Äd and Thamud.''

Here Äd, and Thamud have been mentioned as examples because their history is found among Arab traditions. They were warned by their apostles every now and then, but they belied and rejected all of them and said to them:-

``Had our Lord willed, He would send down angels instead of you. So we will not believe in what you have been sent with.'' In other word they said to their Messengers:- ``You are not Allah's Messengers because you are mortals like us and liars too!''

They knew not this fact that, it is a must, that the leader of Mankind should be a man chosen from among them, so as to be aware of the necessities, troubles, and difficulties of his fellow-creatures. Even if the Messenger was an angel, he had to disguise himself as a Man.

So the people of Äd became arrogantly proud in their land, for their great buildings, magnificent houses, fruitful farm lands, and sound welfare; that they had earned by their arts and skills. In fact they had overestimated their power, and said: ``Who is stronger than us in might!?''

They considered not, that, God Who created them is infinitely stronger than them. They thought too much of themselves, and were arrogantly proud.

The prophet who was sent to Äd was named HOOD. They lived in Southern Arabia from Ummän to Hazarmaut at the bank of Red Sea. They forgot Allah and Allah made them to forget themselves. Evil deeds overtook their society and social affairs and at length they tasted the consequences of their blasphemy and evil deeds:-

``So We sent against them a howling, cold, gale in ill-omened days to make them taste a humiliating punishment in this world.''

The gale was followed by thunder bolts and quakes and destroyed them and ruined their home and hearth. Yet their punishing in the world to come is more debasing.
