Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 133-138Verses 139-148

The fifth prophet mentioned of in this chapter (S-37), is Lot who was contemporary to Abraham and one of his near kins too.

The story of Lot and the fate of his people has been mentioned in many places of Qurän. To make it short here; he was an apostle of God who sent to warn the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah. They shamelessly approached men in lusts instead of women! Lot warned them as an apostle of God, and asked them to avoid evil deeds, but they belied him, and insisted upon their indecencies. When it was made sure that they were not going to repent and stop their shameful homosexualities, God's wrath took them over, and then a horrible shower of brimstone rained upon them, and burried them alive!

Lot and those who believed with him were rescued, and the rest of his people, including an old woman who is said to have been the prophet's wife, were all destroyed! Lot's wife lagged behind and perished with the sinners.

There is a useful lesson to be learned from the ending of the above passage which says:-

``And you pass their ruins by the morning and by the night. Don't you then want to understand and use your brain?''

The said ruins were seen by the contemporaries of our prophet in the highway to Syria when the Arab caravans travelled for commerce. They could see the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah by day and night, and lessons of wisdom could have been taught to students.

For more detail about the prophet Lot, please refer to volume 3-page 195 of this our book, to read a translator's note under the topic of:- ``LOT IN THE BIBLE''.
