The Romans expressed various ideas about this. The “Atrosak” who were the rulers of ancient Rome had one basic belief that the soul of the dead goes to a land of judgment after being buried and gets a chance to defend his deeds as we find depicted on their tombs. If it fails to defend it then is subjected to various punishments. They sometimes made the graves from hard stones and put in all necessary things of this worldly life including dresses, vases, arms, gems, mirrors, and others (1)
The Greek historian Plutarch who lived during 50 to 120 A.D. has written many books regarding the beliefs of the Greeks and the Romans believed that we should believe in the eternal life for the humans, the punishments and the rewards, the Paradise and the purifying purgatory, and the punishing Hell.
