Another proof that can be for the independence of the soul is the issue of the unity of personality during a life time.

We can explain it by saying that even if we are in doubt about everything; we do not doubt that we have an existence.

“I am” and there is no doubt about it and this knowledge of mine is symbolically called present and not something that is acquired. I am present before myself and not separate.

The knowledge of the self is one of the greatest knowledge that we have and no proof is needed for it. The famous French philosopher Descartes

Gave his famous proof “I think therefore I am.” Seems somewhat incorrect because before he could prove his existence he has accepted it twice. Once he says “I” and secondly he says “I do.”

This “I or Me” exist throughout the life till death.

The “Me” of today is the “Me” of tomorrow or the “me” of twenty years earlier. I am the only one person since my childhood. I am the person who was earlier and will be so till my last days. I will not don the garb of another person and I was taught and became educated. I have reached a rung of development and will climb further but will not turn into another man. This is the reason why in my entire life people know me as one person; I have one name and one identity card.

Let us now learn about what this one existence is, which covers our entire life? Are these just the glands and cells of my body or the collection of neurons with their actions and reactions? But these change many times during my life and every seven years. This is because we know that every day and night more than hundred thousands of cells die in our bodies and new ones replace them. It is like taking out the old bricks and replacing them with new ones in a building so that it is renovated after a period though the common man will not know. It is like a big pool which is drained from one side while fresh water is poured in from another; and the water of the entire pool will be changed after some time though no one will be aware of the change for they will feel the water to be the same.

We can say that every being that obtains food and uses it goes through stages of change and is renewed.

The body of seventy years old person is renewed about ten times and under the same laws if we believe the human body to be the just center of physical, mental and chemical and natural functions then it has to change every ten years in this seventy years and he should not be exactly the same person. But no sane person will accept this.

It is clear that other than the physical limbs there is a firm and permanent reality in our lives which does not change like the physical parts. Our existence is based on it and it is also the cause of the unity of our personality.
