IntroductionThe Conclusion

The first verse addresses all mankind who existence in the frame of time and space without exception. The verse says:

““O people! If you are in doubt about the rising, then We created you from dust , then from a drop of sperm, then from a clot, then from a lump of flesh, wholly formed and (sometimes) partially formed , that We may manifest our power to you. And We cause what We will to stay in the womb until an appointed time, and then We bring you forth infants that you may reach maturity.” So mankind goes through four stages before he becomes a human being, the first is being fashioned out of clay, the second is the sperm, the third is the clot and then the clothing of flesh on the bones.” (each stage is a world of its own)

The verse then states that if God so will then the fetus is born alive after being kept for a specified time in the mother’s womb (for it to complete its stages as prescribed and those who we desire we make them still born.)

After completing the stages God brings him out from the mother’s womb as a living infant.

The verse then points to the different stages of human life and then speaks about the plant kingdom. It speaks about the seeds being sown in barren land and the rains that come down and en-liven the earth.

 It adds:

“This is (so) because God is indeed true and because He gives life to the dead and He has the power over all things.”

God speaks about this universe, its deeds and manifestation sometimes through Tawhid and sometimes through Qiyamah. If we pay attention we will find two sides:

One: though the deniers of life after death are adamant in their denial but the Qura’n addresses them and says, “If you are in doubt” and this means that actually there is no reason to disbelieve. The most is that you can doubt about life after death and it is said that he who is in doubt should research.

Here the word “Rayb” is used to deny in a demeaning sense or that your doubt or denial is very weak baseless and insignificant because the proofs of life after death are very evident.

Two: the first stage of human creation has been termed as clay. This may be hinting at the creation of Adam which was out of clay or may be hinting to the creation of all mankind for the major portion of the human body is made out of clay. This is a vivid proof of human creation and the renewal of life in the dead.

Three: this verse speaks of five other stages of human creation above the stage of clay, “Nutfa, A’lqa, Muzgha, the later development and the final birth from the mother’s womb. It then adds up to 7 stages though we here are concerned with only the first five stages and each one of them is about a new life and a new birth and is composed of various scenes of resurrection.

Four: “the We may manifest” this is a symbolism that points to the powers of God, to Tawhid and to life after death.

5. The point to note here is that there is a great distance between two stages that the sperm goes through. It begins from sperm which is an insignificant drop and it goes through various changes till it becomes a complete human being but the time difference between the stages are very little and takes a total of 9 month. We will need a great amount of time if we decide to study each stage separately. Is there any scope of doubt left after seeing such shining proof of life after death?

In the 2nd verse the same thing has been said but in another manner. Actually it points to verse 3 of Surah Qiyamah that says:

“Does man think We will never re-assemble his bones?’

The verses say:

“Was he not a mere drop of emitted sperm? 38. Then he was a mere clot of blood and then He created and proportioned him.39 Then He made them of two sexes, male and female.” It then adds, “40 Is He then not powerful enough to give life to the dead?”

This verse speaks only about four stages of the fetus, the Nutfa, the A’lqa and the creations of body parts in proportion in a child that may be male or female.

According to some linguists “Nutfa” means clean water and this is why the word is used for pearls. (1)

Some have taken it to mean a little amount of water which remains at the bottom of a utensil. (2)

Some have also said that it is clear water that may be small or large in amount (3)

Yet some others have said that the word means a little clear water and it also means pearls.

According to a recent study by the scientists the sperm or semen which is called “Nutfa” is extracted from various parts of the body that consists of spermatozoid. The other portion is extracted from around the prostate and the third part is extracted from the prostate itself and this is the reason for the acrid smell and form of the semen. The fourth part is extracted from “Tera” which is situated near the urine gland.

These five extracts mix in proportion and the result is the life giving sperm. A French scientist has declared that he has recently been attracted to Islam and he has written a book about it. He says that the word “Imsaaj” used in the Qura’n speaks about this though this meaning was unknown to the people and the wise men in the days when the Qura’n was revealed. (See the book Bible Qura’n and science of Maurice Buqaille page 271)

This word is used because of the water or semen that is ejaculated by a man at the end of copulation.

“Many” is derive from the word “mani” and it means to make an assessment and fix the fate this is why death is called “ Maniah and desires are called “Umniyyah” This word is used for semen because it has been decreed that man should evolve out of it.(4)

“ Was he not a drop of emitted sperm?’ (5)

Each one of the four stages mentioned in the verse is a fresh example of life after death. On the one side it tells us about the great power of God and on the other side emphasizes the possibility of life after death.

It is specially so about the sex male or female of the fetus which is a very complicated issue. The law that regulates this is still hidden from the prying eyes of the scientists. We only know that for a long time the sex of the child in the mother’s womb is not known and is known only in the later stages. We also know that the law that governs the determination of sexes keeps a balance between them but the details of this issue are still unknown.

Consider the fact that if there was only one male child among nine female or vice versa then there would have been a total chaos in society.

The 3rd verse after speaking about God’s glory says:

“And it is He who creates pairs, male and female.46. From the sperm when it is discharged.” And then adds: “And that on Him (alone) is the raising for a second time.” It is not very clear how we can understand the hereafter by studying the changes in the fetus but their interconnection demands that the first verse is the proof of the second as some commentators have explained.(6)

The term “Second creation” here refers to the life after death as opined by most commentators but some insist that this refers to the instilling of the soul in the fetus and they have taken the help of verse 14 of Sarah Muminun that says:

“Then we made that little lump of flesh and bones, and we clothed the bones with flesh and then we brought it forth as another creation.”

But if we study this explanation then we learn that this speaks of the Day of Judgment as in verse 20 of Surah Ankabut that says:

“Travel the land and see how God has originated the creation and then God will bring forth the creation of the hereafter.”

Verse 62 of Surah Waqiah says:

“And indeed you have already known the first form of creation so why then do you not remember and take heed?”

The 4th Verse speaks in very short sentences on the same issue in another manner:

““Cursed is man for how ungrateful he is.18. Of what He did create Him? Of a seminal drop did He create and proportion him.20. Then He makes the path easy for him.21. Then He causes him to die and puts him in his grave. 22. And then when He wills He will resurrect him.”

These verses say that the foundation of the creation of man is from the semen or sperm and then the fetus went through the stages of development to become a human child. It then speaks about death and then the life after death and the logical sequence is such that they can be the proof of each other.

We will first discuss some points that demand our attention:

“Of a seminal drop did He create and proportion him.” This is a very meaningful explanation that includes all the changes that occur in the fetus. By proportioning him it means the fixing of his actual existence, his limbs, his needs and his journey through the time in life. God has created him, proportioned and him and made him suitable.

The word “Khalaqah” refers to the first stage of inception of a human being. The word “faqaddarah” refers to the later stages.

The term “Then He made his path smooth for him” is also a meaningful reference that needs our attention and this may be referring to the following:

God makes his birth easy after he has completed all the stages of development.

Normally the head of the infant is above and the legs before but suddenly there is a change and he reverses the position so that the birth is made easy. All the limbs of the mother also soften and she becomes ready to deliver. The infant is subject to pressure from all sides so that he adopts the path of exit. The placenta that carries the child in its water bursts open and the way is prepared for the infant’s exit. In short everything is arranged for the child to come into the world in a smooth way.

On the other hand God bestows the human brain with intelligence and various specialties and each one of them is guide in this life. God also sends His divine Books and apostles to smoothen the way for human obedience and acceptance.

This tells us that man has been given freedom because the verse does not say that God makes him pass through life but says that smoothens the way for him because the manner of travel is left entirely on the person.

The 5th and final verse speaks about the completion of the fetus in details and more has been said than in other verses. God speaks about the parts and the small limbs and says:

““And indeed We created man out of extract of clay. 13. Then We placed him as a sperm in a secure nesting place.14. then We made the sperm a clot, then the clot a lump of flesh, then We made the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh.”

After describing the five stages (Nutfa, A’lqa, Mazgha, Azzaam and Lahm) the verse speaks about the last and the most important stage and that is the breathing of soul into the body. After it the verse says: “We brought out from it another creation” And the verse adds “So blessed be God the best of the creators”

We clothed the bones with flesh and this has been said only in this verse to depict the final stages of the fetus. This also raises the curtain of secrecy about the creation of bones.

It has now been proven that the bones are not something that defines only the structure of man or that they are there to protect the limbs but they are responsible for many biological duties. Bones fulfill the needs of phosphorous, calcium and salts etc. they ensure the safe working of the human body and regulate the heartbeat and the muscles. The most important point is that they gather the red blood corpuscles throughout the person’s life. It is enough to know that 180 million red blood corpuscles die every minute and these bones create new ones to replace them and keep the blood pure.(7)

It should be noted that according to some commentators the bones are created first in the fetus and then the flesh and this is the truth that the Qura’n had revealed more than 1400 years ago when this was unknown to mankind. (8)” The des c r i p tion of flesh as attire is very beautiful and pleasing. A dress beautifies a human body’s appearance and saves it from harm. The bones would have presented a very ugly sight had there been no flesh. Since the bones are always under pressure they face continuous harm but the flesh acts like a cushion and protects them.

Qura’n speaks about the final stage of development of the fetus and says: “We developed another creature out of it.” And this has been said only in this verse. It is clear that the final creation is very different from the original stages because it has been declared as “another creation”

Most commentators believe that this speaks about the creation of the soul because we know that for four months of the pregnancy the fetus is like a plant in the mother’s womb that grows rapidly but is devoid of any movement. The moment it reaches this stage it becomes active. Different truths are realized through the limbs and this development is so sudden and complicated or baffling that no scientist is aware of the cause. Only God is aware about what truly occurs in the fetus that moves from one stage to another.

The transformation from one stage to another in a short span of time speaks volumes of God’s greatness and He is the creator of all that exists; He is the best of the creators and is the sign of life after death to which this verse points in the end.
