The Proof of God’s Oneness Some clarifications

In the beginning of the first verse the denial of the hereafter and the oaths of the deniers has been mentioned. It is said:

“They swear their strongest oath by God that He will not resurrect the dead.” And the verse says,” surely every one will be given a new life. This is a firm promise of God b but most people do not know.”

Then the verse speaks about the Day of Resurrection and the renewal of life of the dead and says that the purpose is “They will be resurrected so that He may manifest to them about that which they differed”

It is said that one of the aims of the Day of Resurrection is to deny the conflicts and return to the Oneness of God because this variety of condition does not permit that the conflicts should end completely. The faith of the believers will be complete and they will reach a point of complete certitude and all conflicts will end. The disbelievers will believe and those who follow the false religions will admit their mistake and return to the truth.

The same issue is presented in the second verse in another manner. It is said:

““Then to your Lord is your return and He will tell you the things that you disputed.”

The disputes will end.

The first verse spoke about the manifest disputes and this verse speaks about the warning and actually the second is the cause of the first because God telling them is the fountain of truth and “Tibiyyiin” is connected to seeing and “Anba’a” is connected to hearing.

The 3rd verse speaks about the judgment of God about their disputes. It is said:

“They fell into schisms very God will judge between them for it, on the Day of Judgment.”

It is clear that after God judges their disputes all disputes will surely end and the truth will be revealed.

This verse speaks about the disputes among the Bani Israel or those disputes that emerged after the revelation of the Qura’n and the advent of Islam. Some people refrained after seeing the signs and receiving the guidance from the Messenger and Islam but some have turned away because of their vanity and personal benefits.

Or it may be about the disputes that arose after getting freed from the Pharaoh and seeing the great miracles. It may be about Moses going to Mount Sinai and Goshen creating a golden calf and the disputes that arose in that period.

Though most commentators have preferred the first view but the verses before this verse consolidate the second interpretation. (1). yet all three interpretations can be merged.

According to some commentators there is hardly any chance for these conflicts to be resolved in this world and it is only on the Day of Reckoning that God will judge them and will separate the defective from the pure and the truth from falsehood. (1)

In the 4th verse the word “Hukm” has been used. After speaking about the conflicts of the Bani Israel the verse says:

“God will judge you on the Day of Resurrection about that which you differed.”

What was the dispute about between the Bani Israel? From the beginning of the verse we understand that it was about Saturday which was a holiday (the issue was whether it was impermissible to hunt or was it legal? There prophet had banned hunting on that day. Or it was about the prominence of Saturday over Friday.

History tells us that normally the Bani Israel were the center of disputes but today this is not so and due to some vagaries of time their existence itself is in jeopardy. This is why they have become united against the Muslims of the world.

The issue being discussed in the above verses has been mentioned in another manner in the 5th verse. It points to the vast differences between the disbelievers and the believers and then says:

“Those who believe and those who follow the Jews, the Sabians, the Christians, and the Magians and those who worship others beside God, He will truly judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. God is witness over all things.”

The point to note is that one of the famous names of the Day of Reckoning is “Yowmal-fasli”. Verse 17 of Surah Nabaa says, “Verily the Day of Decision is a fixed time.”

The term “Yowmul Fasl” denotes the fixed Day of Judgment for all. This term has been used in other verses of the Qura’n to convey the same meaning.

The word “Fasl” means the separation of two things and Qiyamah has been so named because on that day the truth will be separated from falsehood and God will judge all disputes and end them.

The ranks of the pious will separated from the ranks of the sinners and wrongdoers. According to Tabrisi in Majmaul Bayan the faces of the truthful people will be white and shining bright and the faces of the wrongdoers will be blackened.

Does any doubt remain after such a clear explanation about the issue of Truth and Falsehood?

This verse mentioned the six prevalent religions when this verse was revealed and most people belonged to them. God says:

On the Day of Reckoning god will separate the believers from the Jews, the Sabians, the Christians, and the Magians and those who worship others beside God, He will truly judge between them on the Day of Resurrection.” The believers of truth will definitely be separated from the believers of falsehood.

If you need proof and logic to separate the believers in truth from the believers in falsehood then on that Day no such problem will arise and it is useless to describe something that is already manifest. The color of the face describes the condition inside.

1. Fakhr Razi, Qartabi and Tabrisi have preferred the first interpretation and the explanation of Al Mizan supports the second interpretation.
