The Day mankind will stand before GodThe Day when the wealth and sons will not help The Day of no bargaining and no friendship

The attributes cited above tell us about another aspect of that Day and their social effect is very profound on mankind for the message penetrates into the core of the heart.

In the first instance the verse 51 of Surah Mumin says:

“On the Day the witnesses will stand forth”

The word “Ashad” is the plural of “Shahid” and “Shaheed’ and here it speaks of the witnesses on the Day of Judgment. Some commentators have taken it to mean the angels that record our deeds and some have taken it to mean on the Apostles but the meaning of the word “Ashad’ is vast and includes the angels, the Apostles and the true believers.

Some say that it includes the human limbs also that will bear witness to his deeds but when we study the meaning of the words “Will rise’ this idea seems far fetched.

At such points the explanation of “Qiyam” speaks about a special condition that is seen in the courts of law where the witness stands when he gives witness so that he expresses his sincerity, accepts the legal authority of the court and shows respect.

On that there will not be one but many witnesses which will be source of prominence for the believers and a source of infamy for the criminals. A witness that will encompass everything and nothing will be hidden from the court of justice. A witness that the accused will never deny for it will be backed with undeniable proofs.

In the second verse 38 of Surah Naba the Judgment Day has been declared as:

“The Day that the “Spirit and the angels will stand forth in rows.”

Some commentators believe that the word “Saff’ is in active mode its singular and plural are the same so it may mean that the angels will stand forth in separate rows or at least two rows and the Spirit shall be in one of them.

The question that arises here is what does “Rooh” mean? There are nearly 8 or ten interpretations about it but some are very popular:

Rooh is one of the closest angels of God; an angel who is above all others even Jibril and it was he that was with the infallible ones and the Apostles.

It is Jibril the carrier of the revelations of God

It is a great creation who is neither man nor angel.

It means the sprits of mankind but before they are attached to the bodies.

It means the Qura’n and its manifestation is the sign of the Day of Judgment.

Each of these interpretations has been based on the verses of the Qura’n.

Though the word “Rooh” has been used in many ways and meanings only the first meaning seems appropriate here. This can be found in the traditions of the infallible ones.

Imam Jafar Sadiq is recorded to have said in a Hadith:

It is an angel greater than Jibril and Michael

Ibn Abbas says: Allah has not created any thing greater than the Spirit after Arsh. He will stand alone on the Day of Judgment and the angles will stand in another. (2)
