This story has been narrated in fourteen verses of the Qura’n

and it is said: “And we made their case known to the people, that they

might know that the promise of God is true and there can be no doubt about the Hour.”

This tells us that the purpose of this extra ordinary lengthy sleep that resembled death very much, was to teach the deniers and those with doubts the truth of resurrection.

It has been especially discerned from the words “when they disputed about their case” that these people were in doubts and so opposed the possibility of physical resurrection. They wanted the story of the people of Kahf to be forgotten and that those who believed would lose this living example (This is one of the doubts mentioned in the commentary)

Fakhruddin Razi has mentioned 5 different doubts and one was about the number and names of the people of the cave and the period of their sleep. They also had doubts about constructing a worship place near the temple of the disbelievers or near the worship place of the monotheists. (1)

The Sarah clearly states that they slept for 309 years. The words of Qura’n in verse 25 are: “And they stayed in their cave for three hundred (solar) years and nine for lunar years.”

There is no doubt that such a long sleep is similar to death and awakening after it is like life after death, therefore, this event is historically a living proof of resurrection.
