Death is a general lawThe Angels who confiscate the souls

Some times people think that death means obliteration, and destruction of everything and they are terrified because of this assumption while the Qura’n has used the word “ Tuwaffi” ( The confiscation of the souls on God’s command or the transfer from this insignificant world to a greater one ) to describe it.

The 2nd verse says:

“It is God that takes the souls (of men) at death” and then adds: “and those that did not die (He takes) during their sleep.”(1)

He then holds back the souls for which the command of death has been decreed and they never awaken from death and return the rest of the people (who are to remain on this world).

There are clear signs here (The law of death and life and their two examples) for those who ponder on things.

The purpose of the Qura’n for stating this is that just as the soul does not die during sleep but its contact with the body is temporary

disconnected with the body so that it can tour the other worlds there is no indication of destruction temporary or eternal because death is the release of the soul and the journey to other greater worlds.

The word ‘Yatawaffa” is derived from “ Waffa” and means glory or perfection so the term “ Dirham Wafi” means complete Dirham of complete in the sense of weight and so “ Tawaffa” means complete discovery. Keeping in mind that he who receives and discovers is God the meaning will now be that after death man steps into a greater and more elevated world. Such an idea about death dispels many meanings and retrospection. This is the reason why it has been introduced as the gateway to another and eternal world.

Another point to note is that the verse describes death and sleep as something similar and warns the entire mankind , “ How are you oblivious of death when death comes searching for you every day and night and you feel it too.”

You become oblivious to this world in your sleep and are separated from all your status and stature in life temporarily. Death too is an eternal dream but sleep is a temporary one. The last sentence of the verse says: “verily in this are signs for those who reflect”

1. The term “ Mowtuha” seems to revert to the soul but it is actually referring to human bodies because the body dies not the soul and this is the same for the term “ Manamaha”
