The Belief in resurrection and steadfastnessThe belief in resurrection prevents us from sins

The previous five verses describe the positive effect of certitude on life after death.

The 6th verse describes the negative aspects of the disbelief in the Day of Judgment.

“They will ask the sinner, “what led you to the hell fire?’(1)

When the residents of Paradise observe the sinners undergoing various punishments and torments they will ask them very meaningfully” What has led you to Hell?’

The sinners will answer and give four basic reasons: the neglect of the daily prayers, not feeding the needy, intermingling with the evil people and denying the Day of Judgment.

““We were not among those who prayed nor were we among those who fed the poor but we used to talk vainly with the boasters and we used to deny the Day of Judgment.”

We learn here that the mother of mischief is the denial of the Day of Judgment that leads to punishments in Hell for this makes a person irresponsible and bereft of piety.

The point to note here is that the people of Paradise did not ask why God had sent them to Hell but the question is about the causes that led them to Hell so that the punishment given to them will clearly denote their evil deeds and their presence in Hell.

The first among the four causes is the neglect of the daily prayers and then the neglect of feeding the poor, then is the intermingling with the evil people and the last is the disbelief in the Day of Judgment.

The mention of “Yawmid-din” tells us that it is the belief in the Day of Judgment that urges men to do good deeds.

The 7th verse speaks about those who weigh less. It is said:

“Woe to those that deal fraudulently, who when they measure for people demand in full but when they have to give by weight to them they deceive. Do they think they shall not be raised on a mighty Day? A day when all mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds.”

Here to “Zann” may mean firm belief or whim. According to the second meaning a person will refrain from weighing less for others even if he had the inkling about the Day of Judgment but many commentators have adopted the first meaning as has been reminded in the verse 249 of Surah Baqarah and other traditions.

Whether we take “Zann’ to mean certitude or whim this verse is the proof that the belief in the Day of Judgment prevents people from usurping the rights of others.

When a person knows for sure or has an inkling that he will have to face the great court of justice where the good and bad deeds will be judged and suitable rewards and punishment given but there will be no recourse to escape it then he will surely be very careful about his deeds in this world. This belief will educate and nurture him.

This does not mean that those who weigh less or commit other sins do not believe in the Day of Judgment and are disbelievers but it means that either their belief is very weak or they are in a state of negligence or how can it be that a person believes yet is neglectful and immersed in sins?

1. The word Saqar has been derived from the word Saqr which means to become despondent or to melt in the sunshine. Some have followed Maqayis-ol-Loghata and said it means to burn. Sahah-ol-Loghata says that this is one of the name of the fire. The word has been chosen for Hell because it includes all the above meanings. At_ Tahqiq says that Saqar is the name of the fire and not the place with fire like Hell.
