IntroductionThe Proof of God’s Oneness

This verse is divided into four parts. The first part begins with a question. The Holy Messenger is addressed and told that you ask them who is the creator and owner of all that is in the heavens and on earth and then without waiting for an answer he is told , “ You tell them “God” owns everything.”

In the second part it says “He has prescribed mercy upon himself” so that He bestows mercy upon all without exception.

The 3rd part speaks about the Day of Judgment.

“The Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt.” You will all be gathered in presence of God.

In the 4th part the conclusion is drawn and it says, “Those who destroy themselves will never believe” for they will be the ultimate losers.

What is the link between the four sentences? Some commentators say that the first is about the Unity of God and the rest describes the Day of Resurrection or the prophethood and the basic tenets of religion are hidden in it.

But the late Allama Tabatabai has said that the whole verse deals with the question of resurrection and judgment. And this seem better. We will support this by explaining:

“In the first part God has established His rulership over all that exists and has made it clear through the questions and answers especially with a question whose answer is found in the core of the heart so much so that even the polytheists believe it. It is like a father admonishes his child and says, “Did I not provide every facility for your education and development? “And then without waiting for the child to answer he says, “Indeed I did so.”

This proves that nothing can obstruct god’s command in this existing universe.

It is further said, “God has inscribed mercy upon himself” and how is it that he does not declare it imperative when He is the fountainhead of mercy and miserliness cannot touch Him. His treasure will never decrease even if he keeps bestowing from the origin to eternity.

Is mercy any thing but the allotment to those who earn it and deserve it and each creation is guided to glory that it deserves?

Now when these two premises have been proven (one that God is the fountainhead of all mercy and that nothing can obstruct his mercy) then it is concluded in the 3rd sentence.

“There is no doubt whatever on the Day of Judgment and that He will gather you in it.” If death terminate all this then man will never reach the perfection and glory for which he strives and will lose the capacity for eternal life.

The mercy and boon are lifted from him or obstacles are placed in the bestowing of grace but obstacles are no issue and His mercy is also above doubt.

Some people lose the ability of eternal life and become the losers. The essence of this verse is the proof of His mercy, completely logical and different from the proof of wisdom and the proof of justice. (Reflect)

The answer to the question, “the Day of Judgment is good for some and bad for others so how is compatible with God’s justice?’

The answer is the same as explained for this verse and that is that God has bestowed the capacity to reach His mercy to everyone and also its conditions but if some people rust their capacity and destroy it even they have a brain and intelligence, they know about the teachings of the revelations then they will be held responsible only. Since they earn and deserve they will wear the yoke of ignominy themselves.

All the grace of this life are similar some people benefit from them and so there is no obstacle about it.

The point to note is that in the word “La-yajma-annakum” is an emphasis upon emphasis. And we realize that considering God’s mercy the Day of Judgment is an irrefutable reality.

We hope that the arguments and explanations presented for the proof of mercy will suffice and we do not feel the need of further clarifications.
