In the sixth verse there is another attribute mentioned “He who hears the prayers.” The speech of the elder prophet Zakariya is mention saying that when he observed the station and attribute of Maryam (and he was without a child till that day) he desired a son though he had crossed the age for it. He turned to his Lord and prayed, “ “O my Lord! Give me a progeny that is pure: For you are He who hears the prayers.” (1)

Literally Samee’ means the listener but here it mean he who listens to the prayers and grants them because if the listener does not reply then his hearing or otherwise is all the same as if he has not heard at all (2)

 


 

1. Dhurriya here means son and is used singularly as well as in plural form. Here it is singular and “waliya” has been used in 5th verse of this Surah.
