The origin of the word “Hakeem” is “Hikmah”. According to the author Kitabol Aiyn Khalil In Ahmed it takes one to justice, knowledge and kindness. Some people feel that it means to retrain someone for reformation or to restrain some on from oppression. (The first meaning has been accepted by Raghib and the second by Maqayis-ol-Loghat) This is why the rein for an animal is called “Hakma”. That is why knowledge and wisdom are called Hikmah because they restrain mankind from wrong doings. “Hakumah” is used when people are restrained from doing wrong.
According to Lisan-ol-Arab Hakam means knowledge and laws and a decision with truth and justice. According to Sahah- al- Loghat Hakeem is he who performs deeds correctly according to established norms.
According to Nihaya of Ibn Aseer and Lisan-ol-Arab Hikmah is the best knowledge of things and systems and he who creates great things is called “Hakeem’
It is like when we say, “So and so has shown us the best garden through the nearest path.” So a person is “Hakeem’ when he can create the best things in the best possible way.
