THE TERMS ALL HEARING AND ALL SEEING IN ISLAMIC TRADITIONS AND NAHJUL BALAGHAGOD KNOWS EVERYTHING

Qura’n has raised the standard of knowledge of the Muslims through the knowledge of these attributes.

Qura’n has invited all to be attached to this attribute of God and this graceful creation.

It has given contentment to the Muslims so that they spend their lives under and in favor of God.

It is being warned that the people should care about their deeds because the hearing and seeing of God is always encompassing them. This important issue has been dealt with umpteen times in Islamic traditions and some of them are mentioned as hereunder:

Imam Jafar Sadiq told his companion Ishaq bin Ammar. “Fear God as if you see Him. And He sees you even if you don’t see Him. And if you believe that he does not watch then you arte a disbeliever. If you know that He watches and even then you disobey Him then it means you regard Him less then how the commoner regards Him ( Because man is shy of a commoner and even a child and does not disobey the divine laws in front of him.) (1)

In another Hadith Imam Jafar Sadiq explained the words, “He who fears the time when he will stand before his Lord” (Surah Rahman) and said, “He who believes that God watches over him and hears all that he says and is aware of his good and bad deeds and if this knowledge keeps him away from evil then he really fears God and restrains his soul from evil temptations.” (2)

Imam Jafar Sadiq is quoted in Tafsir Ali Ibn Ibrahim to have explained verse 24 of Surah Yusuf “ And with passion did she desire him and he would have desired her but that he saw the evidence of his Lord: Thus that We might turn away from him (all) evil and indecent deeds.” The Imam said, “The wife of the governor of Egypt (when she desired Yusuf) covered the idol in the room with cloth. Yusuf asked, “why?’ She answered , “ So that it might not see me because I feel shy from it’ Yusuf said, “ You shy away from this idol that cannot hear and see and should I not shy away from the God who is all- hearing and all-seeing?” (3)

Tafsir Ruhul Bayan discusses the verse 44 of Surah Fatir: My own affair I commit to God; for God always watches over His servants.”

It is said that Ibn Masood went with some people to the jungle. They prepared the food and invited on shepherd to eat with them who said, “You eat. I am fasting” so they decided to test him and said, “Why did you fast on such a warm day?” He answered, “The fire of Hell is hotter than this.”

The companions were surprised by the words of the shepherd and said, “Sell your goats to us and we will pay you in the price of meat.” He answered, “These goats are not mine. Their owner is my leader and lord; how can I sell the goods of others?” The companions said, “Tell your leader that the wolf has eaten them or they are lost in the jungle.” The shepherd said, “But God is ever watchful!” (4)

Such instances are abundant in history and traditions in which the knowledge of God, His ever presence; His hearing and seeing have been spoken about. This education keeps man away from sins.
