THE REALITY OF LIFEINTRODUCTION:

THE Islamic scholars have included the glory of life as the attribute of God. They call Him Haiy and Qayyum (the ever living and the most glorious) as we have said earlier. This has been mentioned often in the verses of the Qura’n though the commentators are at loggerheads about the meaning of life.

The best and acceptable explanation is that which we have mentioned above that the life of God is the complete knowledge and authority over everything or else the senses, movement, the heart beat, the breath, thoughts and imaginations have no place in its meaning.

It will be clearer if we say the life of the one whose knowledge is un-limited; whose authority has no boundaries but is inherent is the perfect life.

He is the creator of life. Can it be possible that He is the creator of life but not unique in life?

The term ‘everlasting” or Qayyum has been explained as God exists because of himself and He gives existence to all things. This is also one of the attributes of God. This is imperative because God is the Necessary Being and is the creator and the sustainer. Some people have taken the protection of all beings and their sustenance also as Qayyum and this is not something new.

The Late Allama Tabatabai says in his commentary Al Mizan, “the name Qayyum includes all those attributes of His deeds like creativity, sustenance, inventiveness, the control over existence, the resurrection, to kill, forgiveness and grace etc. (1)

This is why the mention of Haiy and Qayyum is one of the best mentions of God because Haiy is the most important attribute of knowledge and power and Qayyum includes all those activities related to deeds.

We end this discussion with a very meaningful quote from Amirul Mumineen: “In the battle of Badr I wanted to see what the Holy messenger did against the enemy. I saw that he was prostrate and kept repeating “Ya Haiyo Ya Qayyum” till such time as God gave victory”

In a sermon recorded in Nahjul Balagha Amirul Mumineen says, “We do not know the reality of your elevated status and glory but that you are living and sustaining the universe; you are not overcome by slumber, or sleep and You are never unaware of your subjects.”
